CF: Hong Kong Film Awards, Still Lacking New Blood

“The Hong Kong film industry is completely controlled by commercial interests. The investors are ultimately businessmen. Employing new actors may cost them less money, but the risk is very high, simply because box office revenues cannot be guaranteed. So, a lack of famous stars in a movie will mean fewer people will be willing to invest in it.

According to Hong Kong media reports, actress Cecilia Cheung who divorced her husband, popular star Nicholas Tse, earlier this year will not make an appearance on this year’s film extravaganza in an effort to dodge the media limelight.

The same scenes were censored during the film’s original run in China in 1998, but many viewers first saw the film on pirated copies from the West, and thus are more familiar with the unedited version.CDT

Some even lampooned the state watchdog with a satirical news story, “The State Administration of Radio, Film and Broadcast finally gave an explanation of its decision to remove the nude scene it OK’d 15 years ago: ‘In light of the specialness of 3D movies, we are concerned that viewers may extend their hands for a touch during the scene and hit heads of viewers sitting in their front, which may result in disputes. In consideration for building a society with spiritual civilization, we decide to remove the scene.’

TaipeiTimes: The Soul of Bread review

It may be a sugarcoated romantic comedy, but ‘The Soul of Bread’ exudes a small-town charm and boasts a lovable cast.

New directing talents Sean Kao and Lin Chun-yang make a respectable stab at romantic comedy with The Soul of Bread (愛的麵包魂). The result successfully revitalizes the overworked genre with Taiwanese idiosyncrasies and easily connects with audiences.

I Love Hong Kong 2012 is a light-hearted comedy about the Kwok family, which is headed by Kwok Ching (Stanley Fung), a TV weatherman of 20 years who aspires to be a news anchor.

“The formula is always the same. It starts with a happy family, then arguments happen but, in the end, all the family members will be together again. The formula will never change as far as Lunar New Year comedies are concerned.”

The company also believes they’ll save money in training and retaining workers in the US. Who knows if there’s more going on behind the scenes here, but considering how big a story it was when all TV manufacturing left the US, it’s certainly noteworthy that (at least at one plant) it’s come back from Asia.

Qi Wei, June press conference

Cheng Pei-Pei, Qi Wei

Actress Qi Wei has had all her scenes deleted from the Simon Yam thriller, Coming Back. According to rumours, the actress refused the ‘unspoken rule’ of moviemaking, turning away the attentions of a valuable investor. Allegedly, on the eve of an important investor’s signing a contract, Qi Wei turned down ‘further contacts’ from the brand sponsor who expressed admiration and goodwill for the actress. The producers intervened but after numerous attempts could not get the actress to meet the sponsors conditions and travel requirements to Macau, eventually losing the sponsor. The angered producers said that the actress did not understand the rules and, thus, blocked her.

Subsequently, the actress’ image was no longer featured in posters and later, all her scenes deleted from the film. In addition, Qi Wei did not appear in the film’s promotional events. Though not expressly named, Qi Wei is the likely victim. Director Li Yuan, when questioned, only gave a vague response. Qi Wei’s agent said that the scenes were deleted for other reasons. (Sina)
