According to a Hong Kong magazine, 90’s-era actress, Jacqueline Law, is recovering from 6 months of chemotherapy. Diagnosed with stage 3 cancer last year, the actress suffered from depression and contemplated suicide. A former girlfriend of Stephen Chow, Law married Singapore businessman Liu Chee Ming in 2008. Law is deaf in one ear due to a diving accident. Law’s father died of lung cancer in 1998 and Liu’s ex-wife also died of cancer, so the word ‘cancer’ is taboo between the couple. Law is thought to have NPC, Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

China uses whistles, water, police on protests

Near Shanghai’s People’s Square, uniformed police blew whistles nonstop and shouted at people to keep moving, though about 200 people — a combination of onlookers and quiet sympathizers who formed a larger crowd than a week ago — braved the shrill noise. In Beijing, trucks normally used to water the streets drove repeatedly up the busy commercial shopping district spraying water and keeping crowds pressed to the edges.  China’s jasmine revolution: police but no protesters line streets of Beijing (GuardianUK)

Cecilia Cheung’s days as famous actress numbered

Cecilia Cheung is facing a boycott threat from a Chinese production company if she does not finish filming The Lady General of the Yang Family.

Major Chinese newspapers reported that Shanghai Film Studio, the second largest film production house in China, had threatened to withdraw its investment of the film if it was not wrapped up by the end of the month.

Cheung was scheduled to shoot 47 sets but discontinued after completing only 31.

This agitated the production house, which threatened to boycott all films by the Hong Kong actress.

“The boycott is expected to affect Cheung’s reputation as an actress,” one newspaper reported.

‘72 Tenants of Prosperity’: New year, old jokes

In times like these, Lunar New Year movies are a welcome sight at the 4 Star, which is bringing back the tradition after not showing any last year. What’s cool about this double bill - along with “72 Tenants,” there’s “All’s Well, Ends Well Too 2010″ - is that it opens in San Francisco the same week both films open in Hong Kong. Cheung, who plays a driver in an SMS flirtation with a pianist (Rene Liu) in the star-laden romance Hot Summer Days, is also in the comedy 72 Tenants Of Prosperity.

Speaking from the sidelines of the premiere of Hot Summer Days on Tuesday night, he said: ‘I was doing a Chinese New Year movie and a Valentine’s Day movie. How was I to know they would be released together?’

It just so happens that this year, Valentine’s Day falls on the first day of Chinese New Year.

He said the two films were different and hoped both would do well at the box office.

Hot Summer Days, directed by first-time film-makers Tony Chan and Wing Shya, also stars Nicholas Tse, Barbie Hsu, Daniel Wu and Vivian Hsu.
