Global Times: The branding wars: Zhang Ziyi’s latest self-reinvention falls flat

The solution is really not that complicated. All she had to do to survive the scandals was to admit to the fraud and then blame it on her team, but she held on to her pride and refused to apologize. She denied the fraud and made excuses, which finally evoked public rage and large-scale media criticism.

Zhang made the right choice by keeping a low profile for some time, enough for the scandals to dissipate and Zhang and her team to create a new public image…

April Bride

In Japan, if you make a movie about a gorgeous bride with terminal breast cancer and cast the hottest young actors, you can make a lot of money. Whether or not it will encourage female viewers to have their breasts checked regularly is another matter. Nana Eikura is the unfortunate woman, whose diagnosis and a mastectomy send her fleeing from her perfect boyfriend (played by Eita), who manages to track her down in time to propose. Based on a true story.

Love Twisted

Late last year we previewed Man, Woman and the Wall (2006), a Japanese erotic thriller steeped in voyeurism. Love Twisted was made in Japan two years earlier, but shares the theme, as well as crossover porn star Sora Aoi in one of her first non-porn roles. Imagine Fatal Attraction with more nudity and set in a really depressing housing complex. Starts tomorrow.

Into the Faraway Sky

Taiwanese actor Chang Chen (張震) has a supporting role in this 2007 film set in Hokkaido about offbeat villagers standing in the way of an airport project and the government man sent to fix the problem. The Taiwanese distributor, ahead of a DVD rollout, has changed the Chinese title to link it to the otherwise unconnected Taiwanese production Orz Boyz! (冏男孩). Starts tomorrow.

News from KOFIC
Haeundae Box Office Rampage about to Hit China

Even though tidal wave warning systems had predicted the oncoming Haeundae tsunami, the Korean box office was not prepared for its mass devastation. The film attracted 1,546,976 viewers in its opening weekend grossing over 11 billion won (U.S $.9,000,000) Climbing to number one in the box office it even managed to push aside Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which has been weaving its own box office magic around the world.

Tsunamis usually subside but Haeundae has continued its onslaught going from success to success. Initially, when it was released back in April it sold to a number of territories at the HK Film Mart. Word of its success obviously reached back to Korea and anticipation of its release here was high. More recently, it has been announced the China Film Group (C.F.G), will, on a revenue-sharing basis import the film into China. This is rare for a Korean film but given the film’s star power, ongoing success and mix of big-budget, block-buster yet non political ideals, does seem an ideal China release. The film was released in Korea July 23.
