Smaller films made big splash

Over the past year, three small-budget movies, Eternal Moment, The Piano in a Factory and Love is Not Blind, flexed their competitive muscle by attracting audiences and critical praise.

According to Chen Shan, professor at the Beijing Film Academy, the allure of small-budget films in the era of big-budget blockbusters is their ingenuity.

“Because their original cost is much lower, they can be more flexible with their themes. They dare to try something different from the mainstream, while blockbusters have to be more cautious,” he said to the Global Times.

Singapore director Jack Neo is evidently sticking to his winning formula - fresh-faced teen actors, heart-breaking family drama and a healthy dose of social commentary in his latest directorial offering, We Not Naughty.

(Aug.21) Tang Wei’s appearance at Tengchong airport drew screams of recognition whereby the actress had to hastily don  her sunglasses.

Tang Wei will reportedly play Donnie Yen’s wife in Peter Chan’s adaptation of the One-Armed Swordsman film, Wu Xia. The leads arrived early in Tengchong County to acclimate themselves to highlands high altitude atmosphere which is 3000m above sea level. Peter Chan selected Tengchong as a location because of the beautiful scenery; there are terraces, ancient villages, waterfalls consistent with the ‘retreat’ concept of the film.  Despite the rainy season not quite at an end, filming is to begin in September because Donnie Yen’s schedule is full with Monkey King scheduled to begin shooting in December. During an interview at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Peter Chan said Wu Xia is about a sword master, played by Donnie Yen, in seclusion for years. Detective Takeshi Kaneshiro is curious and his scepticism leads to trouble. Chan said Wu Xia will combine action, science, medicine and special effects. Chinese Film: Happy Noodle Year

2009 has come to an end, but the battle for movie-goers has just begun. This season, the competition is more intense than ever. Take this downtown cinema; by mid-February it will have screened four dozen films since late-November. Film makers believe it’s this bumper holiday period, taking in Valentine’s Day and Spring Festival, that will lay the golden eggs…

The film market is like a highway. If too many cars take to it at the same time, there will be a traffic jam. In that case, even a BMW can’t drive at top speed.

The head of the cinema chain said to make the maximum profit out of the market, a film must enjoy at least one week free of competition before it’s joined by a new one. But now, cinemas are getting much busier than in previous years, as it’s common to put on several new films in a single day, resulting in vicious competition…
