Sina: Terence Chang issued a statement denying recent rumors that John Woo had throat or pancreatic cancer or a heart ailment. According to him, Woo had the beginnings of a throat tumor removed at the beginning of the year in Taipei and went to the US to rest but he was not hospitalized there as reported. John Woo also called the media and reassured them that he was in good health and only had a small tumor on the neck that had spread to his tonsils removed. 23

FBA: Anticipated films lock China dates

Wong Kar-Wai’s martial arts drama The Grandmasters will open on 18 Dec.

Jackie Chan, along with other cast members, will attend the Cannes International Film Festival this May.

He attributed this to film investors’ aversion to risk and the lack of perseverance among younger filmmakers and artistes.

“This gap in the Hong Kong film industry is very obvious both in front of [the camera] and behind the scenes.”

Miriam Yeung, said, “I am about to give birth, and this will be my last movie before I do so. Of course it’s better to go to the movies than staring at the monitor at home. CRI: ’The Great Magician’ Premieres in Hong Kong(CF)

The film, set against the backdrop of early 20th century China, is about a magician, played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who returns to his home town only to find his childhood sweetheart, played by Zhou Xun, has become a concubine to a warlord (Sean Lau Ching-wan). The magician attempts to use his tricks and illusions to win back the heart of his love interest.

CF: ”Viral Factor” Actress Lin Peng in Harper’s Bazaar’s Short Film

The film explores the aesthetics of violence, interpreting them in a gothic way. Actress Lin uses her fighting spirit in “Reversion” and “Viral Factor” alike, presenting action-packed visuals.

“The Flowers of War” stayed at the top of the box office again this New Year holiday week, taking in $20.86 million over seven days. This highest-ever-budget movie has already become the top grossing Chinese film of 2011. And just like last week, “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” was No. 2 in mainland and “Dear Enemy” was No. 3.

The Liberty Times speculated that the two spent their rumored Bali trip celebrating the critical success of Chinglish, a theatrical production by Chinese-American playwright David Henry Hwang that uses 11 of Wang’s songs. Time magazine placed it at number three in its list of last year’s top 10 Broadway shows.

Previous reports indicated the film would cooperate with Tsui Hark’s “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”, also produced by Bona Film Group, to go head-to-head against Zhang Yimou’s Oscar-hopeful “The Flowers of War”.

“The Flowers of War” was supposed to go head-to-head against “Flying Swords of the Dragon Gate.”

A spokesperson for Bona provided the press with a clever if not all too revealing answer, stating that, “There is a possibility for us to bring forward the date too; the final decision will be announced at the premiere ceremony of our film on December 12 in Beijing.”

Stephen Chow has reportedly abandoned his plans to film “Tai Chi” next year citing unhappiness with his script. Instead, he will film a 3D version of “Little Mermaid” and begin casting for a lead actress soon. (Sina)

The original film will be released in mainland China next week. About 900 prints of the film have also been sent overseas, making it the biggest Bollywood release outside of India.

CF: Final Promotional Trailer of “The Allure of Tears” out

The production company of the sensational film “The Allure of Tears” released the movie’s final promotional trailer on December 6, featuring the third story “The Third Drop of Tears.” The film consists of three separate stories, respectively entitled “The First Drop of Tears,” “The Second Drop of Tears” and “The Third Drop of Tears.” Directed by Barbara Wong and starring an all-star cast with Zhou Dongyu, Gigi Leung, Richie Ren, Joe Chan, “The Allure of Tears” is scheduled to open in national cinemas on December 22.

Directed by and stars Xu Jinglei, with other stars including Stanley Huang, Christy Chung and Gigi Leung, the film will hit cinemas on the 23rd of December during the Christmas holiday slot.

Indie film like “Shattered” is pushing boundaries while offering commercial promise.

CIFF is the most important event on China’s indie film circuit, drawing buyers and festival programmers from the US and Europe. It is also one of the few opportunities for independent filmmakers to show to large audiences.

Only films that have received the “dragon seal” after clearing the State Administration of Radio Film and Television approval process can normally be shown in commercial theaters, sold or broadcast on television. The approval process is both cumbersome and often entails compromise.

CF: ”The Sword Identity” Premieres on the Mainland

The film “The Sword Identity” tells the legendary story of a sabre coming out from a military camp, wanders from place to place, making ripples on the world of martial arts, before finally being recognized by orthodox denomination of martial arts .

The Patrick Leung-Corey Yuen martial arts-action film “Great Wudang” held a press conference in Hubei yesterday. The cast includes Vincent Zhao (Chiu Man-Cheuk), Louis Fan, Yang Mi and Dennis To (To Yuhang) and Xu Jiao. A summer 2012 release is planned.

As 2011 draws to a close, celebrities have made this the year of the showbiz wedding.

Handsome but unengaging anniversary film about the founding of China’s first republic.

According to statistics from gewara.com, the largest online movie ticket sales platform in the Yangtze Delta, China 1911 was the second most popular movie on Friday. It fell behind May Day 3DNA, a music movie from Taiwan.

Scheduled to open in China on 16 Dec 2011, the film began its eligibility run at a 22-seat VIP screen at Beijing’s Capital Cinema yesterday. It is screening once per day for seven days.

Taiwan model/actress Lin Chih-ling plays identical twins - one a material girl and the other, a down-to-earth office worker - in Love on Credit, a romantic comedy to be released this autumn.

“The Sorcerer and the White Snake (Its Love)” will be screened simultaneously in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and other Southeast Asian regions on September 29.

Actor-singers are not a new phenomenon, but what is new is that fierce competition is forcing more young stars, with indifferent skills, to release albums to stay in the limelight.

In the horror film, Mysterious Island, which grossed more than 90 million yuan ($14 million) in the mainland, Yang [Mi] is not just the lead actress, but also the singer. Her two singles, Love of Support and Summer in Love, have topped local new song charts and are highly rated online.

The actress, who began acting at the age of 4, played a minor role in King of Beggars in 1992, which starred Stephen Chow in the lead. The slim, big-eyed girl then went on to study at Beijing Film Academy.
